- Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith, a teacher at the YMCA International training school in Massachusetts. Dr. Naismith wanted to relieve the boredom of his students during winter physical education classes. He had 2 peach baskets nailed to both ends of a gym, found a soccer ball and set out some rules, which are some of the basic rules today.
- The first game was played in a basement gymnasium. There was a stepladder to retrieve the ball from the peach baskets.
